Study overseas options
The University offers several programs to support you to study overseas whilst enrolled in your UniMelb degree. You can undertake studies overseas through a number of different programs:
Exchange
Exchange students remain enrolled at the University of Melbourne and are also enrolled into a host institution overseas. Students continue to pay tuition fees to the University of Melbourne and do not pay any tuition fees to their host university. Read further on how you can go on exchange.
Short-term Programs
Short-term programs give you the opportunity to study overseas for 3-6 weeks and gain 12.5 or 25 credit points towards your degree. Experience new cultures, develop critical employability skills and prepare for a global future – all without the long-term commitment of a semester or year-long program.
Explore our winter term (June-July) programs or our summer term (Nov-Feb) programs to find out what opportunities may be available for you.
Applications open and close on a rolling basis. Winter term applications open between February to May and Summer term applications open between September to November.
New Colombo Plan (NCP) Program
The New Colombo Plan offers Australian Undergraduate students with funding opportunities for overseas study experiences in the Indo-Pacific Region. This includes two funding programs:
- New Colombo Plan Scholarship - a prestigious award from the Australian government to fund up to a year of overseas study plus an internship in the region
- New Colombo Plan Mobility Grants - individual funding to support student participation in semester-exchange and short-term programs in the region.
UoM Overseas Subjects
If the course in which you are enrolled makes it difficult to find a suitable semester to study overseas because of course planning issues or the requirements of your major, or if you are simply not sure about undertaking a semester abroad, the University of Melbourne has an increasing number of single subjects available in different faculties which are partly or wholly taught overseas. You could be eligible to undertake one or more of these University of Melbourne Overseas Subjects (UMOS) as part of a major, or often as breadth across most degrees.

If you identify an overseas institution that offers a unique study opportunity which is not available at the University of Melbourne, or our extensive partner network, you may apply to study their as a fee paying student. This is an independent form of overseas study where students pay tuition fees to their selected host institution overseas, rather than the University of Melbourne.
For credit to be transferred back to a University of Melbourne degree, students must receive study plan approval from Stop 1 prior to departure. For more information and to apply, click here and here is a list of current programs.[Anchor]
Internships
A small number of opportunities exist for students to undertake internships/externships or some sort of work experience placement abroad to meet a hurdle requirement or for credit to a University of Melbourne degree. As work experience and internships are not always formally recognised in courses at the University, many of the opportunities that exist will not carry credit or be counted as meeting hurdle requirements, but do provide a valuable experience by undertaking formal training in an international context.
